Paul Le Gall has given diatonic accordion lessons in the Centre breton d'Art populaire since 1993. Immersed in traditional music since 1965 in the Cercle Celtique of Plouedern (Department of Finistere), he learned to play the tin whistle and the bombarde. In 1980, he discovers and 'falls in love' with the diatonic accordion...
You said "diatonic"?
Accordion, in its original diatonic form, appeared in Brittany at the end of the 19th century.
It quickly became popular, it was at that time the instrument used to liven up celebrations. Traditional instruments were put away for some time.
Then, chromatic accordions progressively appeared and attracted many people in open-air cafes and in village dances.
Later, some musicians gave the diatonic accordion a new life and place, adapting it to new and diverse musical styles. Today, the diatonic accordion is often played with violins, clarinets, bombardes, guitars and other instruments.
Diatonic accordion offers the player access
to a varied repertoire :
- Sailor songs
- Popular songs
- Celtic music
- Folk music, etc...
